My arab gelding had a few mounting issues when I first got him. I eventually realized a lot of his bad habits (didn't like saddling process, girthy, wouldn't tie etc.) probably went back to having bad fitting saddles or possibly bad girthing techniques. Then the mounting block, he would stand just till my foot was approaching the stirrup, and then aside. So I just surprised him one day and mounted from the ground. He seemed a little shocked for a moment, but he didn't seem to have a good avoidance tactic for mounting from the ground. I did still have to teach him to stand till I gave the signal to move. But we worked it all out. These kinds of bad habits can have a long history of just someone not teaching the horse right in the first place.
