Hi there,

I am currently looking to see other joint supplement options for my quarter horse because she has some joint stiffness and I hate to see her uncomfortable. Currently I have her on one called certa-flex but I'm wondering if there are better options. My mare does regular work training as a hunter/jumper but we also do a lot of flat work and try other riding styles, at least 3 flat rides a week or more. Unfortunately she only gets out side to roam around a few hours a day and that's if weather is permitting. I think not getting outside for longer contributes to her stiffness and I'm working on getting her out for longer but until I can  I think supplements and long warm ups and cool down are my best option. But I'm asking for advice from the horse community, are there particularly good joint supplements I should try? What are the ingredients I should be looking for in a joint supplement and what ingredients shouldn't be there? Are there other things I can do to help her stiffness? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Beth.

Hi Beth,

My 20 yr old thoroughbred mare has osteoarthritis from an old injury.  I use Tri-Acta H.A. and have had very good results.  You can order direct from the company, or get more information at Integricare.ca.  My vet recommended this product.  I did have her on the Tri-Acta for awhile without the H.A. but found for her, it was not as effective.  It is a bit pricey, but seeing the old girl kicking up her heals is worth it to me.   More turn out time would definitely help.  I only keep mine in during very extreme weather.  You may want to look up some stretches that you can do with your mare as well.

Good Luck

Hi Bethany,

The three things you want to look for in an joint supplement are MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin. The higher the levels of Glucosamine the better off you are for the joint supplement. Also look for anything that a seal of approval from the USDA. Most joint supplements are considered herbal remedies and there is no guarantee that you will be get the same dosage from tub to tub. The fact that you are making sure she gets more turnout and that she has lots of warm up and cool down time is fantastic. You are doing the correct thing. Just keep on doing what you are doing.
