Ours all compete in halter and riding classes, so they need them; the longer and fluffier the better.
However I have seen so many rescue clydes with horrible legs ( scratches etc ) and They have to be shaved immediately to let the sores breathe and be treated ( they never go away ) you can only ease the pain and deworm. - this comes from neglect, and because of the long feathering they do require ( if you dont shave ) alot of attention and making sure the area under feather ( above fetlock/under etc ) is dry, clean and have no "crustys." Clydesdales also get mud fever pretty easily because of the restriction of air.
I think as long as you keep their legs( not just feathers ; p ) clean and dry Feathers are a stamp for clydesdales and I love'em.
NOW whos getting tired of ordering bits online?!
AND sewing jeans to fly masks?!!!
Hey Leanne, I do trim Clyde's feathers especially in the spring, I do not show him so I like to trim them a bit shorter and thin them so they do not collect as much mud in the spring. I use a good human hair brush and mane and tail in the summer to keep them clean and silky. Oh and lots of elbow grease LOL ;) brushing and brushing.
Thanks Lee!
I pull mines mane and that also thins it and keeps it neat as his is extremely thick- too thick for the thin rolls if its not pulled.
I agree on the hunter braids, as for flowers in the clydes mane after rolling they do have to be a certain number for each sex.
HAHAHA ( donkey hair dressing ) how cute! One of the fillys at my barn keeps stepping on her long beautiful feathers.. grrr!!!
I use the mounting block aswell- 'specially for mane rolling/braiding!!!!
For all those aching arms after bathing: I use a car wash extended brush ( to reach the roof etc. ) it attatches to the hose but is great even not attatched and I use it to bathe my guy it works great - your shoulders will thank you and you get all the tough spots on those high bums!
Emily love the photos of you doing your horses mane, I will also go and check out the site for mane rolling. Clyde's mane is extremely thick do you pull or thin it at all?
I believe in hunter classes buttons should be an even number (in the mane) with the forelock being the last one making the total an odd number.
Luckily Clyde's tail was not docked and it is growing in this season really well, (it was short last year, I think donkey may have been practicing his hair dressing skills on it) I feel so bad for them when they have no tail, I know you can buy extentions and braid them in...LOL
We still go through alot of fly spray over the season.
p.s. have to use a chair for mounting Clyde
Ohhh My Gosh Emily......
now I ask ya ... How Amazing Is That???
Thanks for sharing!!!
...erm....More Pics Please!! ...lol
no doubt about it ... I think I'm going to need to get some lessons in mane rolling / braiding :-(
Do you know of any ... would you maybe be able to recomend a "How To" book??
I've seen some in ebay, so I know there are some about ...but ...
I'd LOVE to get a recommendation from the master 'erself!! ;-)
