I have 3 mares at the moment, two DWB's and one Trakehner, and they are all wonderful. They all compete in dressage, and I could not ask for steadier or more dependable competitive partners. One of them is an alpha mare, and she can be a real hag in the pasture, but she's lovely to work with, train, and compete. The other two are very mellow on their own time - they get along with pretty much anyone, share their hay, hang out, etc., and they're both extremely trainable.
I have had some stallions and geldings who were incredibly hot and difficult, not just to manage but to ride competitively (I never knew whether I had Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde until I halted at X). I have learned over the years to pay a LOT more attention to bloodlines and much less to gender!

Oh one of my mares would just drive a lower ranking horse through the electric fence. So much easier! I never did use blankets, or else I'm sure she would have figured out how to use it to her profit.
And this mare DID NOT LIKE OTHER MARES, she'd be fine with a gelding, but not other mares.

I love mares, they can be awesome wonderful animals, but then they can become irritated with you and demand that you ride better. My gelding taught me how to ride, my mares made me a horseman.
