Is the Grass Really Greener?

"If only"…

I was asked to speak to a women's group this week in Toronto on the topic of marriage and singleness.

Big topic…but the potholes on either road are the "if onlys". Fall in, and we'll miss the scenery along road.

In the show ring, in…

Three choices.

In life, we are given three choices. Give up, give in, or give it our all.

I gave up.

At 20 years old, I am fighting depression, my physical health, and desperate to find a path to my future. When I was 17, I was forced to sell the Thoroughbred that was my ticket to…

My Lesson at North Fork, Karen Sees the Difference Frictional Grip Makes in My Riding

Last weekend my husband and I went up to Maryland and I got my yearly lesson from Karen Fenwick at North Fork School of Equitation in Jefferson, Md.  I found this long trip (around 1,000 miles round trip) totally exhausting.  By the time I got to North Fork I had been traveling for three days and I was not in top shape physically because I was very tired.  But autumn has finally come, North Fork is in the foothills, and it was cool enough so I could wear my deerskin…

What to Do When Nothing Works.

We all have those rides where the simplest thing, the thing we do all the time, becomes impossible. The horse is resisting the aid, he just won’t do it. Now what? What do you do when nothing works?

First, get really mad. Swearing is…

Apples to Apples

Apples came to us this summer from my husband’s ailing aunt. She is entering the early stages of dementia and as a result decided to sell the farm and move into a retirement community nearby. Though we weren’t necessarily on the market for a persnickety 12-year old Percheron mare, our farm came with stables and an empty paddock and my husband was insistent that Apples stay in the family, so now she’s become the newest member of our household. My daughters are overjoyed but I guess you could…

Grooming Makes Me Tired

I did not get to ride Sunday because Shannon had hurt her shoulder.  Then on Sunday my son cut a gash across one of his knuckles (2 stitches) so he could not help me with Mia on Monday.  My husband was home so he kindly took me out to ride Mia, but he had strained his hand so I had to do all of the currying, brushing, hoof rasping, tacking up and applying fly spray.  My husband did manage to clean out the hooves and put in the thrush medicine.  By the time I got to the ring…

No Small Feat. (Ruby Ranch Horse Rescue.)

Meet Archie.

He got introduced by that name, but I prefer being a bit more formal with him, as a sign of respect. Archibald feels more suitable.

Here he is passing time with a couple of boys in my herd, but I…

Is My Horse in Pain? Part 2

Humans show pain through facial expressions which have been coded and used to assess the discomfort of patients who cannot communicate their suffering in other ways, such as babies.

Scientist have done the same for laboratory animal (for example the “Mouse Grimace” scale).

And now the Horse Grimace Scale has been…

Rocket Man!

It's been two years since my Total Knee replacement, and three since his serious hind end injury (best guess is that zigged when he should have zagged, on ice, and went down in the pasture) and we've been slowly making our way toward real riding. He's clearly bored stiff in the ring, but we normally walk the trails and with the hard ground, I'm using Old Mac boots - which he interprets as the right to run. ;).  I still can't post for lengthy periods and his sitting trot is impossible…

Will I Have to Become Artsy-Craftsy to Make the Horses Happy?

This week I experimented with my Western woolen saddle blankets on the Arabs I ride.  The previous three weeks I rode Mick with just my triple-fold woolen Western saddle blanket.  While he showed great improvement with relaxing the muscles in back of the saddle he was not too sure about the front of the saddle, and he just was not moving as freely as he did when I just used the Corrector pad.  I came up with the idea of putting the Corrector in between the top and bottom of…

The Battle Cry of An Old Gray Mare.

“Do You Work Out?” I find this question difficult to answer. I’m never sure what they are asking but it was even worse when I was single. Then I thought it was a code phrase for another question.

Are you asking do I go to a mirrored room and…

Is My Horse in Pain? Part 1

You hit a roadblock at a horse show and, because youre a thinking rider, you don’t jump to the “he’s just being a jerk” or “his saddle doesn’t fit” or “she must be in heat” conclusion, with a sigh and a wave of your hand. You look deeper. A common thread. Go through your mental files of personal experience, and the proven facts about horse physiology and behaviour…

Scared of puddles!

My horse will not go through puddles. He will do anything to not go through them, bucking, jumping (he will jump it even if its like 5 meters long), hopping, throwing his head..etc. How do I get him to believe its ok to go through them. I have tryed walking him through the puddles and showing him its okay but he will drag me over the puddle by jumping it. Help!
