As spring arrives, so does horse show season. While it would be great to buy yourself a new wardrobe each year to start the season off fresh, doing so probably isn’t practical. If your wardrobe from last year is looking a little drab, there are a number of ways you can spruce it up without spending a ton.
Add a New Show Shirt
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to rejuvenate your show wardrobe is to add a new show shirt to the mix. Show shirts are relatively affordable, and adding a new color can allow you to keep up with the quickly evolving show trends.
Polish Those Boots
A little boot polish can go a long way, especially when it comes to show boots. By spending just a few dollars and some elbow grease on your boots, you can often restore them to a show ring-ready shine. Remember, too, to always bring a soft rag ringside with you to give your boots a final wipe down before entering the ring. Make sure that your boots are properly stored in between shows to prolong their use and impressive appearance.
Buy a New Belt
A new belt can quickly liven up your wardrobe, especially for Western riders. Buying a new belt is a great way to add some sparkle and shine to your show outfit. If a new belt is out of your price range, consider upgrading to a new buckle for a fresh look.
Consider Lightly Used
If your show wardrobe is in need of a more expensive item that is out of reach when bought new – think new tall boots or a new pair of show chaps – consider buying a used version. Often you can find excellent deals on used show clothing and accessories, whether buying them from a consignment section at a tack shop or directly from a seller.
If you do opt to buy an item directly from the seller, especially if you do so online, be sure to ask plenty of questions about the item to be sure that you are getting what you expect. You may need to ask the seller to take specific measurements to ensure that the item fits you. Always get good quality pictures, too, if you can’t see the item in person, and issue payment through a trusted system, such as Paypal. See our blog post for more tips on buying used tack and equipment.
There are a variety of ways to rejuvenate your show wardrobe without spending a ton of money. Be sure to always keep your show clothes clean and properly stored in between use so that your wardrobe can last you for multiple show seasons.
