I got my first horse 40 years ago today (7-4-1970, I was 19) after having trail ridden in Chile and Uruguay for four years while in grade school.
I am now disabled with Multiple sclerosis. I still ride due to the kindness of others (human and equine}.
I now ride Forward Seat on the flat, since I am too disabled to jump.
I adore Arabian horses!
Thanks I agree with a good ride is more important than winning! Leo and I are doing really well we have improved so much you couldnt even believe it, thanks for asking how are you and your horse doing? Hope you have a good lesson on Wed.
Hi Jackie, I guess we're both suffering along with lower than normal temperatures! It makes me depressed!!!
Here's Teresa's email address:

One of my customers wants to look at her horse for sale (pity, she's giving up the horse because of the MS. I don't know her specific circumstances but I feel bad for her.
My Connemara is just under 14:3. She's what they call a "buttermilk" buckskin - black points but no dorsal stripe, and almost palomino in summer with dapples. We do mostly dressage but we have done competitive trail riding and we have evented. She really loves to jump but is settling nicely into the dressage. I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
My disability is a result of an incident (not on horseback) that caused a fracture in my left hand. Unfortunately, it was not diagnosed right away and when it was, arthritis had set in and caused more pain than I ever thought possible. In relation to riding and since my left hand is my "mounting hand", it is very difficult to get myself up on the back of my 16.1 hand Thoroughbred. I am blessed with a wonderful, steady horse that patiently waits for me to get on but none-the-less, struggling at the mounting block for 15 - 20 minutes and sometimes even longer is creating tension and frustration. As a result of the same accidental incident, I also had several broken/brusied ribs and manner in which this injury happened has caused permanent pain and the resulting discomfort. That leaves me with great difficulty maintaining a posting trot and my stamina level will probably never be where it was before this happened!
I joined this group to be part of a community of disabled "horse" people and also to possibly get some ideas and feedback from people that have had similar injuries or maybe even people that have the same resulting riding issues that I now have, no matter what their disability may be. Lastly, I hope that I can be supportive to other disabled riders as a member of this group.
Hey jackie! Yes he's mostly curly in the winter when his hair gets longer and noticeable. Summer time he looks straight Q/palo silky golden short hair. Your pics are great. I'm sorry to hear bout your MS :(

Yeah, I have a friend up the road with 3 pure curlies and they are so stinkin cute. I can't imagine the kind of pain you must experience, but you are awesome for keeping up riding. That is therapy for the soul too! :)
Thanks for the welcome Jackie. Not sure what is all on here but I enjoyed some of the videos. My wife and I live on a ranch in western ne. I enjoy training young horses and we raise a few colts.
Yes we do keep on going. I think my riding is the main thing that keeps me going, keeps the arthritic joints moving about and keeps the old brain ticking over.
Hi Jackie, Thanks for the welcome. Just found out about this site from a friend. Keep on riding it's the best therapy for most things. Good for you. I bought my first horse when I was 16. That was 50 yrs ago and I can't imagine life without one.

Hi Jackie! I think it's so cool what you do with using horses as therapy. My mom works with a couple of people with MS and I'm trying to convince her to talk to them about therapeutic riding, I know how wonderful it can be :)
I'd love it if you'd add me as a friend and comment on my videos and stuff as I add them.
That's so amazing. Your doctor should be taking notes, ha ha. I'll be sure to let my mom know all of that. There's one lady in particular that I really feel would benefit from riding, she's only about 4'6 and incredibly frail, but I feel like she would really improve at a riding center.
Hi Jackie, excuse my English beforehand, it's not my native lang)) They say in Russia we had two ASBs, but they didn't survive (It's strange because our climate doesn't much differ from yours) Tell me please if you know, how do they do it to make the horse walk like this, I mean to throw hoofs forward. Do they put some kind of filler into the front hoofs or such gait is inborn? And do you know anything about tail? Is such state of it inborn too or formed somehow?
She's very interested, I'll show her the blog posts. I was thinking that this particular lady would definitely need side walkers, at this point she is very weak and unstable.
Thank you Jackie for the welcome! I am meeting with Ollie's trainer that worked with him before I adopted him today. I hope to get some "homework assignments" out of our session. I will check out the body language like you suggested. Sympathy works.. I have felt like crying a couple times during this endeavor!
Thank you Jackie. Im not a beginner but I have been away from the horse life for 2 decades. I adopted this horse because I wanted to give him the good home he deserves however I think looking back I was unprepared for the challenge that he is. He was abused and neglected. The trainer that worked with him before I adopted him came out on Sat to help me get him back on track. He is really good with this type of horsenality. He is left brain passive and gets aggressive if he's upset. He gave me a lot of good tools to use. I am committed to this and I am not going to give up on him. Its too important to me and to him. Thanks for your support!
