I got my first horse 40 years ago today (7-4-1970, I was 19) after having trail ridden in Chile and Uruguay for four years while in grade school.
I am now disabled with Multiple sclerosis. I still ride due to the kindness of others (human and equine}.
I now ride Forward Seat on the flat, since I am too disabled to jump.
I adore Arabian horses!
Nice to hear from you, Jackie, and your horses look great! That little bay looks a lot like our Rosie, a tb that I got for one of my students. She never puts a foot wrong - either saddled or in the stall or pasture. I'd be happy to write once in a while about my teaching experiences, so you will be hearing more from me! Love this site.
Hi Jackie, I just read the latest newsletter from Charlie @ Horse Training Resources about the "count to 10 rule". I am going to try this with Cooper as we have been working on turn on haunches and forehand and getting sloppy turns. Great letter!!
Yes he is a wonderful farrier. Not only does he do all of our horses (8), but he also works on a Thoroughbred farm with over 150 horses too. So he is very busy, lol.
Thank you, the more I learn about horses the more I know I need to learn. I really appreciate the knowledge of anyone that is willing to teach me the smallest fact to make my horses happier.
Thanks Jackie! HotShot is an Arab/Percheron cross and was my third police mount, bred specifically for the job. He was downtown on a lead-line when he was four months old and he still helps me with training. THe "Desert Norman" is an awesome cross! My very first horse Kiddo was an Anglo-Arab - got him when I was 12 and had him for 31 years. He started the mounted police unit with me in 1988. I'm very active on FB and a few other lists, so I doubt I'll be here much, but we'll see. Feel free to friend me on FB!
Hi Jackie ! Thanks for welcoming me to Barn mice ! I Love the name. Where do I find the avatar photo of the Arabian you once had Jackie ? I never knew how smart Arabians were until I owned Samantha. My boyfriend wanted an Arabian after he lost one. They are very difficult to find where I live on Long Island, NY. We found two and brought Samantha home. She wasn't saddle broke and was 5 years old. I saddle broke her and to make a long story short, she eventually became my horse when my boyfriend passed away unexpectedly. What a smart girl Sammy was, it's amazing how they bond with one person and become very protective !
Yes I am a Driver!! I was born and raised on a horse/Dairy/Beef farm and we had Commercial Horses~Clyde-Hackney crosses, Hackney horses and Ponies, RoadHorses, Standardbred Race horses, & Morgans
Hi Jackie, Thanks for the welcome. My husband and I do all the farm work, and I have a full time job, also. I actually haven't ridden in quite a while - too much work, too tired, and still fighting the fear from a WB that I used to own. I keep promising myself I'll get back on when the weather improves and there is less barn work to do.
Wow, Mia is 30 years old and still rideable ! What a pretty mare. Yes, Samantha understood English very well. I would test her and she came thru with flying colors every time. She liked to reach for my cheek and give me a kiss when she was thanking me for something.
What a nice story about Mia, Jackie ! It has such a happy ending for both Mia and yourself. I give you a lot of credit to do what you are doing with MS. You look good up there in the saddle. Mia is lucky that you care about her and give her the attention she needs.
I don't have anything as serious as you do but I have my neck fused at C-4, C-5 & C-6. I'm also told I need rods in my back but I'm putting this off as long as possible. I miss riding very much. I have had many a surgery including scapular surgery. This is the first time since I was 12 years old that I haven't had a horse to ride and I'm 55 now. I just have Ginger, the pony. Hopefully, one day I will have another one once I'm feeling better. All the hard work of putting up fencing over the years has taken its toll on my body.
I'll have to see if I can get a photo of Samantha up on my wall.
I used to ride horses about 16h. My horses now range from 15-16h. Shorter is easier for getting on and off, but the loss of confidence extends to all sizes. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting on, and I'm OK riding until I get a spook or a disagreement.

The ponies are fun, tho I haven't either one of them, I have shown them in hand. I have a
"young rider" that rides for me. Their both green but are good minded and are jumping a little bit. The goal is to makes them show ponies--I hope.
