I'm considering trying to lease a few broodmares in the next few years. From what I understand this is a fairly common Standardbred and Thoroughbred thing.
I am wondering if this happens much/if people would be able to do it in the sport horses and ponies?
And also, a free lease situation, or would the owner have to be paid?
Thanks!

Hi Amanda

Some broodmare owners don't want a foal every year but are willing to allow their mares to have foals every year, so you can work some deals with mare owners. I know some breeders do an every other foal deal, some are free leases, some are paid leases. It's up to you and the broodmare owner to agree on what each of you want and then see if you can match up appropriately if not move on to the next owner/mare.

I was willing to lease a mare to produce a sport pony foal, I had lots of mares on offer for the terms of the lease agreement (that I was willing to live with) but I had specifics on what the mare had to be (registration, size, etc). As I didn't want or need another beastlie to ride it was perfect for those with unsound mares that they had 2 or 3 foals on the ground from but didn't need another foal right now. While I didn't find the right mare in the time frame I was needing a mare/foal, there were some pretty excellent mares on offer.

Check the horse sale/lease sites and talk to owners that have the type of mare (or breeding) operation that you would like to emulate and see what can be done. But have a list of specifics in mind of what you are and are not willing to live with that includes mare (type, registration, # of previous foals, etc.) and lease agreement (terms, etc.).
Thank you!
