Holy Cats! I found some bugs in the rice bran pellets I supplement our two horses. Should I just toss them? Can horses handle the bugs? I've switched to an airtight container. For all I know the eggs may have been there when I purchased it. But it IS hot here in Central Ca and bugs love the heat ( or so I'm told)

Your input would be helpful.

Thanks,

John

You could try and take it back to the supplier. Many horses are or will develop allergies to bugs and end up with heaves/COPD. If you cannot return it then throw it out. Anything with high fat content and all feeds in general should be kept in airtight containers. Fats can easily start to go rancid in hot weather and any high fat items should be kept refrigerated or even frozen (for long term storage). Another problem is mold growth. Many molds have toxins in them and can cause problems for this reason. You will not be able to see/smell either the mould growth or the rancidity until each one is at a high level and past the point where it should have been discarded.
Thanks. I'll toss it out tonight.
