As posted by The Trail Rider Magazine on their Facebook Page - who is your favourite clinician? Western, English, Aussie, Training, whatever. Who is it, and why? Do you have any fond memories of clinics?

I'll start by saying that I've seen very few clinicians, but the ones that stood out to me most have been Clinton Anderson and Steffen Peters. Steffen stood out to me from the beginning as someone who really cares about his horses, and who knows what he's talking about. He was the first rider to get me interested in dressage, and I am grateful for that, as otherwise I would still be a "dressage is soooo boring!" type of person! Clinton Anderson stood out to me with his natural horsemanship methods, because he was different than the others. Unlike John Lyons, Pat and Linda Parelli, and many other Natural Horsemanship clinicians, he seems to understand the horse for the horse's reasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure to some riders, Pat & Linda or John & Josh have their reasons that ring true, but personally, these two have stood out to me most. Of the clinicians I haven't seen, I'd have to say that Monty Roberts and Julie Goodnight have to be some of my favourites. I would do anything to get to see them some day.

So, who is your favourite clinician?

I got a clinic from Doug Huls who is an AQHA world champion judge. I believe he lives in the very far Southern States of USA, and he came to Alberta Canada for 3 days to be at the barn I ride at. I watched him at the main event in April, and in June I rode with him. He was very tough but had my horse loping like we hadn't seen in over 8 months of working him and he had me DOING it to MY horse in 4 hours. He had the push i needed but also knew when to give me praise, I was honored to have a ride with him.

Jonathan fields is another clinician I got to watch at the Main Event and he was superb, really cool techniques and humorous guy!

I always dream to ride with bare back reining legend Stacey Westfall.
I've seen Chris Cox, Mark Rashid, Clinton Anderson, and watched lots of TV shows with clinics posted.... I don't have favorites anymore..... For various reasons I think they are good and bad...... :) my trainer rides my horse like Stacey Westfall, so I'm sticking with him....
I hope you mean your sticking with your trainers methods because stacey westfall is female..lol.
that is a thumbs up!!
good good, I figured so. I missed Stacey Westfall at the mane event a few years back and I am still kicking myself..
Do you know how long she has had her horse??? Stacey? they seem to have such an amazing connection... I did notice that she rides with spurs....
riding with spurs is a great way for a rider to keep an equitation leg while also doing extreme intricate manouvers. I ride my horse with spurs, and I wouldn't get a good lope, or spin without them, look at high end dressage riders, even they use spurs as each different "push" from a spur is a button. IE if I roll both my spurs it means lower head, if I roll one while moving the hip over with a kiss it means lope, moving by the girth area with my spur means shoulder over (more shoulder=spin), vice versa for hip, holding both my spurs on him causes him to round up and my whole leg on him means slow down, bouncing my spur on either side at the same momentum as the trot will get my horse to extend his gait but not change it, all of this looks easy because of the spur if I didn't have the spur I would ahve to exagerate my movements which wouldn't be nice to see in the show ring. Same goes for Stacey. I would believe she has ridden horses for a good portion of her life.

I was just stalking your page and decided to respond to this even though it's old :)

Sadly, the only semi-famous trainer I've had the pleasure of attending a clinic by is Dennis Reis. I really liked him a lot, though I wouldn't say he's my favorite. I'm probably mostly a Clinton girl, though I also like Julie Goodnight, Monty Roberts, Stacy Westfall, and Buck Brannaman, among others.

Buck Brannaman is a genius of a man. I'd love to see Ray Hunt in action, as well. I would have loved to see Tom and Bill Dorrance when they were still alive. Bill's "True Horsemanship Through Feel" coupled with Monty Roberts' "The Man Who Listens to Horses" have done a lot in the way of opening my eyes to real horsemanship. Not carrot sticks and roundpens, but actual horsemanship and connecting with the horse on his or her level, and speaking his or her language. Both are fantastic reads; I suggest picking them up next time you're at the library or a book store :)

I'm not a huge Stacey Westfall fan, just because she glorifies something that in reality, just about every horse and rider should be able to do. It's a matter of putting in the time and effort. Perhaps it's the old vaquero in my head, but that's another reason I love above mentioned trainers/riders/horsemen. They take the time to develop their horses, and don't rush them into anything for the sake of money or ribbons. :)

I agree, and I'll definitely look for those books. You've really enlightened me on a bunch of new reads today, lol :D.

I think one of the main reasons that I like Stacy Westfall is because she's such an accomplished woman in the industry. Honestly, I think we out number the guys in real life, but it's usually them who make it in the spotlight, so it's nice to see people like Stacy or Julie Goodnight make it big.

That's true. Lynn Palm is another one of my favourites, as it Anky van Grunsven. Not entirely, but a lot because they are very accomplished women in the industry. Like you said, I think we outnumber the men in terms of numbers (duh.. lol), but there are a lot more successful men than women. Take a look at the AQHA Hall of Fame list. 9/10 men (estimating/exaggerating, but seriously...). I admire them for their femininity, but Stacey's horsemanship isn't on the top of my admiration list. The same could be said about Anky's horsemanship (she's been noted to use rollkur on more than a few occasions). To each his/her own! :)

I do like what I've seen of Lynn Palm, Julie Goodnight is my favorite though. Don't know if I've heard of Anky Van Grunsven.... what discipline is she?

I think we should just like, become really famous horse whisperers, not settling for the average small barn. That'd show all those guys XD
