Hello all.....my little mare got kicked while out in pasture 2 weeks ago. The swelling is located in her rear pastern. As the lesions on the outside were minor, and she was walking ok, I continued to put her out on pasture for 10 days, thinking that the movement would help bring the swelling down. I was cold hosing during this time, but there was no change at all.

A week ago, I had the vet out, and he did an ultra sound which showed that there was no tendon damage, but a good sized hematoma within the swelling. I've been wrapping at night, giving her bute, icing it, and she is now in a paddock. I am still seeing no change. I am supposed to be using DMSO as well, but the vet hasn't dropped it off yet....

Does it take longer for a hematoma to dissipate than just having swelling only? I just am not sure how long this might go on. The vet suggested ultra sound thereapy as well, but I can't afford it at this time.

I had this happen to one of our horses.... It is going to take a while to go away. ... but it will. I would not worry.. it just looks terrible.. ofter gets worse after you call the vet... looks painful... but it does go away. It just takes a while. My horse had a hematoma the size of a football- at least that big if not bigger by the time it reached full size.... looked absolutely terrible. But the horse totally recovered. One just has to keep up with treatments and it does go down. I did what you said.. cold applications and DMSO... some bute? I can't remember if I did or not- I think just for the first little bit... maybe a week? Just be patient!!! It is going to take much longer than a week to go away.
The DMSO will help - be careful not to get any (ever) on your hands!! yikes. A little goes a long way on a human... ugh.
Nasty. Yes the haematoma (sorry - English spelling) will go. Just takes time for the blood to find its way out. If you think about what swelling at an injury site is - its basically the body's way of protecting the injured area. The haematoma is just blood that has got trapped inside the skin or soft tissue and it looks awful, but often doesn't hurt and will eventually go down. My horse got one on his chest - obviously from a kick - which was enormous and sort of hung down (not a good look :-0), but it did go. Can't comment on DMSO (don't know what it is), but it sounds like you are doing everything right.
