Hello All

For all the employers out there...what qualities do you look for when hiring barn staff/barn managers/working students etc.?

What would be appropriate attire for a great first impression? What questions do you like the applicant to ask?

No matter what the job - here are a few common sense interview tips:

1. Start as you mean to go on. Be on time, be prepared, be professional, be honest.
2. Communicate. Once you get home I recommend an email or phone call to say thank you for the interview, follow up with any questions that may have occured to you after the interview was over or politely let the interviewer know if that is NOT the job for you - you dont need to elaborate on reasons why - that way they can continue their search. You wouldnt want to be "left hanging" and neither do they.
3. Be prepared to commit. If offered this job right now..how much comittment can you give the employer. A season? A full year? 5 years? Be aware of your own personal goals prior to applying and interviewing for jobs.

Before applying for a job take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself what it is that you NEED and WANT from a job. This little exercise can result in 2 very different lists.
for example
NEED $XXX/week minimum to pay bills, rent etc, NEED some weekends off to persue my own horse show schedule, NEED to live within 1 hour drive from work site.
WANT to learn from my job, WANT to stick to my 5 year plan, WANT to work hands on with the horses, not just barn work
you see how it goes.
Apply only to jobs that you have researched first and that seem to fit with your own wants/needs.

I hope this helps

Sarah
