Does anyone have an idea why horses sniff and dig the ground before they roll?

The worse it smells.. the better it is :)
You'll note that in a herd, most horses will roll in the same spot, and, I believe, it has something to do with all smelling the same. They can then recognise other herd members by smell. But, I could be all wet.

I suggest maybe they test the fertility of the ground. If it is 2 dry or wet, they move!
