I am considering purchasing a Thorowgood dressage saddle with adjustable "fish" system. I ride a lot of different horses and I'm wondering if this could be a good saddle for me. I have ridden over 35 years but mostly as a hunter rider with the last 10 yrs. concentrated on non-competitive dressage. I'm hoping someone might help me with any opinions they might care to offer me about this saddle. Thanks

This might not help a lot as I don't own a new style TG dressage saddle with fish, however I purchased a TG EURO dressage saddle about 15 yrs ago with the key to adjust the width of the gullet and I still have it and it has held up perfectly over the years. I didn't hesitate to recently buy the all purpose T4 -3D adjustable gullet which has fish as well and I love it. I have a TB with med high wither and a QH with a lower wide wither and needed a saddle to fit both. I of course had to buy a med gullet plate for the TB as the Wide Gullet which came installed didn't fit him. These saddles are made in England which I like. Best wishes in your decision.
Hi Elaine: Thank you so much for replying. I'm seriously considering purchasing one of these saddles because I am starting to ride a new horse in May and I am not comfortable in the owner's Keifer and my saddle does not fit him. I really appreciate your comments and from what you have said I'm pretty sure I will be getting one. I'm not sure what part of the country you live in but Greenhawk has one on sale right now for $769. Do you know whether this seems like a fair price? One more thing, I can't seem to find any used Thorowgood's on the internet, so I think that would be a good sign that any body who has one is not wanting to get rid of it. Thanks again. Chris
+We switched to one of the T4 series saddles for hi-withers last year- in our case they are used for several retired racehorses (standardbreds) and the adjustable fish and bar options have solved all kinds of issues.
The saddle is more comfortable for us and them -if the position of the dressage is like the AP style I think it
might work fine for you.
Hi Dave: I thank you so much for your first hand advice. I am just starting to ride a 16.3 HH TB who is quite narrow with high withers and the saddle I have does not fit him. I'ts good news that you have had success with these saddles and I'm thinking it could work for me. I have had one other person via Barnmice sing the praises of these saddles as well. I ride a number of different horses and sometimes the saddle that comes with the horse fits him but not me! I'm quite sure now that I will be going ahead with purchasing one of these saddles. Greenhawk has one on sale right now for $739. Do know if the price sounds about right? Thanks again. Chris
If I remember we bought last year from Greenhawk on a package that was about 800$.
I remember we had all kinds of choice with the irons and pad and girth size etc so we customized a lot of it right in the store- the set-up we got was a high wither with wide bars and we don't have the fish in at the moment- the med bars might be better with a TB but the 3 standardbreds we have ridden in this saddle range from the older style "blocky" trotter to the newer much more TB type of build and it fit all of them-I know in the UK the high wither is the most used for ex-runners.
Check on the package price on the series and maybe the dressage one is being offered-
Thanks a million Dave! I have made up my mind thanks to your positive comments as well as another person who wrote back to me with the same praise for this saddle. The new horse I am starting to ride I would describe as an "old style" TB and I have found out that with the Thorowgood saddles I can also adjust the saddle to fit the shoulder area as well as his high withers. Your help is much appreciated. Chris
