I've just began using a figure eight noseband on my four year old gelding. I use a loose ring french link, and I have fairly light hands. So far he's been going on the bit beautifully, not overbending at all and it seems to fit his face ( He's got a very long head) better than his previous bridle (plain raised). Just wondering what experiences people have had in the past with figure eights, especially with young and green horses.

Thanks!

I love the figure-eight nosebands, mostly for the look. My horse had no problem with it. The only thing I saw people doing wrong was over-tightening the strap. It's supposed to be comfortable and supportive, not on so tight the horse can't move it's mouth. I think that aids are for training, gentle reminders, and looks. If you are having to use them just to force your horse into doing something you want, you're doing something wrong! People are so quick to use artificial aids because they don't want to take the time to train their horse properly. Why have a horse then? My motto is a horse needs to horse first. Then worry about the show. Sorry I kinda went off on a tangent there!
I'm curious about what prompted you to try the figure eight? I have considered it for my five year old gelding, who fusses quite a bit with his head and mouth. I've always hated cranked flash nosebands and the drops have their own problems, but I thought a figure eight might be more comfortable, and maybe not have to be tightened so much to stay in place.
I look forward to hearing from others, thanks for asking the question!
Well, I've wanted to try it on him for awhile. I was really just curious
to see how he'd move in it. And I'd rather use a figure eight noseband
than a harsher bit. It does look very very good on him, I'll have to post
a picture or something....
