I sent my 8 yr old Anglo-Arab off to jumping school this past June and brought him home last week. He was kept indoors from June to October so he doesn't have much of a winter coat right now. We're just heading into our cold winter, (Alberta, Canada) currently -7 at night but within the next month we'll be getting into the - 20's & -30's. I do have a coat for him but my problem is, we're going away for 3 weeks. I have 2 friends coming over morning and night to check on my horses but I'm worried he'll get 'tangled up' in all the coat hardware! My horses are kept outside year round with shelters and fed round bales, they're not used to wearing coats. I have a barn (unheated) but they like to be outside.
How fast will his winter coat come in?? Can I leave him coatless??

Hi, I also live in Alberta and wouldn't want to see him without a winter coat and blanket here for the next 3 weeks. I would check your paddock thoroughly for things he could catch the blanket on or move him to a safer one ( without trees etc) for the 3 weeks. Also someone said that they add binder twine to all the connections on the blanket so they will break if he ever did get caught up. Elandra
Thank you Elandra. Today my girlfriend told me she'll stay at our home so he can be coated and she can monitor regularly. My horse's are kept in a log post area, no barb wire/wire/ trees but...I would still be worried about him. Thanks again...
