Horses rescued from Yuma County, Colorado this July are now ready to be re-homed.
More than 50 horses were seized by officials from a Quarter Horse breeding facility just south of Yuma on July 27 of this year. Many of these horses were very young, some just weanlings and yearlings.
Yuma County Sheriff's Office went on to the property and seized 56 horses. There were over 150 horses on the property at the time, NBC's 9news.com of Colorado reports.
"There were several animals that were determined to be in several stages of neglect and malnourishment," Yuma County Undersheriff Matt Hardesty told 9news.com. "Private citizens in Yuma County actually notified the Yuma County Sheriffs Office, at which point we opened a criminal investigation into the matter."
Over the past four months, the horses have been nursed back to health and will be up for adoption at the Yuma County Fairgrounds on November 26.
Although a legal decision has not yet been made against the owner, the court has authorized the adoption of 51 of the horses.
The adoption fee of these horses is $100 and interested parties are required to apply for adoption and receive approval by reaching the minimum standards. The potential adopters also must sign a contract to ensure the horses future care is fully met.
