Abandoned Horses in South Florida Include Former Racehorses

Five horses found starving and abandoned in Miami-Dade, South Florida,  include four Thoroughbreds and a Quarter Horse.  The Thoroughbreds have been identified through their lip tattoos.

One is an unraced mare,  Cornish Gold.  The other three all raced at Calder, Gulfstream Park, or Tampa Bay Downs.  One mare, Salient Finish, earned almost $2,800 in 16 starts.  A gelding named El Tabrawy earned $34,000 with 2 wins in 31 starts.  The fourth, a gelding called McMurphy, raced for seven years earning over $150,000, winning 12 of his 70 starts.

The horses were found in a deserted, junk strewn neighborhood which was known to house illicit slaughter farms.  The individual who reported their location to the authorities maintains that the slaughter business may be starting up again after a series of raids last year effectively shut the industry down.

The four Thoroughbreds have been placed with TRAC, an organization that works to retrain and rehome racehorses when they have finished their career on the track.

The Quarter horse has not been identified and is still in the custody of the SPCA.
