The Grand National this year featured some traditional characteristics:  the winner was trained by the son of one of the most successful trainers in recent history.

The winning horse, Ballabriggs, is owned by Trevor Hennings, was ridden by Jason Maguire, and was trained by Donald McCain.

McCain is the son of Ginger McCain who trained Red Rum, the legendary three-time winner of the grueling test.

It was the second win for owner Hennings who also owned the 2005 winner, Hedgehunter.

Jockey Jason Maguire had just been in the hospital after a fall two days before.

In second place was Oscar Time ridden by Sam Waley-Cohen, an amateur jockey.  The third place finisher was Don't Push It, last year's winner, with Tony McCoy in the saddle.

This years feature was marred by the deaths of two horses, both of which had falls resulting in broken necks.  The fences where the horses fell were bypassed in the second lap around the course.
