Thirty years after his emotional Grand National victory aboard Aldaniti, Bob Champion received a hero’s welcome as he was called to the winner’s enclosure to collect a memento to honour his induction as a John Smith’s Grand National Legend.
“I can’t believe it was 30 years ago,” said a delighted Champion. “It only feels like five years ago. I watch the tape of the race regularly and as long as I keep winning, I’m happy.”
Champion, wearing Nick Embiricos’ famous blue and white racing colours, was joined by fellow inductees Richard Dunwoody, who won the National twice with West Tip (1986) and Miinnehoma (1994), and Brian Fletcher, who rode three National winners (Red Alligator, 1967, and Red Rum, 1973, 1974).
Also present were Charles and Michael O’Brien, son and grandson of the great Vincent O’Brien, who was also named a Grand National Legend having trained the winner of the great race in three consecutive years (Early Mist, 1953, Royal Tan, 1954 and Quare Times, 1955), and Peter Luff, the owner of West Tip, who was one of two equine inductees along with Aldaniti.
Tom Olliver, Karel Kinsky, Jack Anthony and Peter Bromley were also named as John Smith’s Grand National Legends.
