FROM RESCUE HORSE TO ENDURANCE COMPETITOR

The sport of endurance riding demands much of the competitors, both human and equine. But there are a surprising number of endurance horses who came to the sport by way of rescue organizations. The winter issue of AERC Extra, published by the American Endurance Ride Conference, features stories of several of these rescue horses who went on to succeed on the endurance trails.

With competitions ranging from 25 to 100 miles per day, much care, conditioning and training goes into developing the physical endurance and mental toughness the sport demands. Looking at some of the “before” photos from the Extra would lead a reader to believe the horse could never be more than a pasture ornament. But some of these horses are now top competitors in the 40-year-old sport.
