Graham Motion trained Animal Kingdom, ridden by John Valazquez, came from behind to win the Kentucky Derby.

Robby Alborado was the scheduled rider, but had been injured and the horse's training team switched to Valazquez at the last moment.

It was Valazquez' thirteenth ride and his first win in the Derby.

Animal Kingdom only raced four times prior to the Derby which is considered a disadvantage, but he overcame his lack of experience.

Nehro finished in second, Mucho Macho Man was in third and Shackleford, the early leader, held on for fourth.

Update:
ArchArchArch was pulled up at the finish. He was stabilized with a splint, loaded into the vet trailer, and taken back to the barn where he was diagnosed with a condylar fracture which is non-life threatening. He will have surgery to repair the fracture.
