Telus Battle of the Breeds
Held in September of each year!
In the TELUS Battle of the Breeds, different breeds of horses are judged based on their abilities to perform unusual obstacle challenges in the Meadows on the Green Ring. The events include Compulsory Skills, Jeopardy Jumping, Barrel Racing, Trail Riding, and Precision Driving. Eleven breeds are represented by four horse/rider combinations. Two team members must compete in each event. The team with the most cumulative points is named breed champions. It has been Team Appaloosa that has claimed supremacy over the rest, for the past two years and will look to complete a natural hat trick.

This year’s entries include the reigning champion Appaloosa team, and teams Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Saddlebred, Warmblood, Standardbred, Morgan, Arabian, Paint Trakehner, Connemara, Canadian Horse, Welsh Cob and the long-earned Mule. The only event of its kind in North America, the TELUS Battle of the Breeds guarantees a packed audience. (65,000 plus on each day of the event and televised to 134 countries) For 17th year in a row, horse and mule owners from across the province will be fighting it out to prove their breed is tops when it comes to versatility.

The TELUS Battle of the Breeds is a team competition. Each breed that enters fields a team of four horse and rider/driver combinations. There are five components which cross a broad range of disciplines: Compulsory Skills, Prescision Driving, Barrel Racing, a Trail Competition, and Jeopardy Jumping. Each team has two horse/rider combinations competing in each component. The team members' scores are added together and they share a placing.
