Rebecca Howard Top 12 at CCI 4* Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials
Ottawa, ON --- Canadian Olympian Rebecca Howard earned 12th place against some of the best Eventing competitors in the world at the renowned CCI 4* Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, held May 2-6 in England. This made her the top North American at the competition, which is the largest paid-spectator sports event in the United Kingdom, and one of only six international four star events held throughout the world.
Howard, originally of Salmon Arm, BC, currently living and training near Marlborough, England, was competing at Badminton for the first time. Her partner was her 2012 Olympic Games and 2010 World Equestrian Games mount, Riddle Master, the 12-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding sired by Rodero, who is owned and was bred by Blithe Hill Farm of Orangeville, ON.
Their inaugural experience at Badminton kicked off with Dressage on May 4, where they received a score of 51.3 penalty points and tied for 32nd place.
"Riddle Master is an amazing partner but had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the atmosphere here, and it impacted his performance," Howard commented on her Dressage phase. "He needs more time at events like this so he can adjust and become comfortable and do what he does so well outside the ring."
Howard and Riddle Master were foot perfect over Hugh Thomas's cross country course, incurring no jumping faults and only 0.8 time faults for coming in just two seconds over the optimum time. This brought their score to 52.1, moving them 10 spots up the leaderboard into 22nd place heading into show jumping.
The pair completed the three days of competition on a score of 52.1 by riding a clear Show Jumping round that added no time or jumping penalties to their score-making this one of the best performances by a Canadian athlete at Badminton in recent history.
"You grow up reading about (Badminton) and wanting to be there," explained Howard. "This was incredible. It had this very historic feel to the entire event. It was truly exciting to be here."
The winner of the competition was Jonathan "Jock" Paget and Clifton Promise, representing New Zealand, who narrowly defeated reigning Olympic and World Equestrian Games Gold Medalist Michael Jung of Germany and La Biosthetique Sam.
