Hannah Holik Dominates Junior Hunters and ASPCA Maclay Qualifier at
Summer in the Rockies II
Parker, CO - Hannah Holik and her hunter and equitation mounts were on top of their game on Friday at the Colorado Horse Park's Summer in the Rockies II. Holik began the day by sweeping the blue ribbons in the ASPCA Maclay and both Equitation 15-17 O/F classes with Dahlila. Later, she piloted Tache Rouge to wins in the Junior Hunter O/F and Handy classes. Both Dahlila and Tache Rouge are owned by Czech Mate, LLC.

Holik, who is based in Jackson Hole, WY, travels to the Horse Park every summer to compete. She said the Scott Starnes-designed Junior Hunter courses were a good match for Tache Rouge. "I really enjoyed the courses today," she said. "They flowed really well for him. There were a couple of bending lines and a couple farther-away distances, like a single oxer, and he flows really nicely across the ground, so those are good for him."
She described Tache Rouge, nicknamed Marcos, as a "big, lovable pony" who has helped her move up the levels. "He's taken me from the Children's to the Modifieds to Junior Hunters," she explained. "I've done hunter derbies with him; I've done everything. He is very sweet and we have a wonderful relationship together. He's just a great horse."
The courses called for forward, confident riding, especially through a long five-stride line early in the first round. Holik and Tache Rouge maintained a solid pace and negotiated the lines and rollbacks with ease.
"He really enjoys the gappy hunter distances, which, I think, can benefit him," Holik said. "He jumps well out of a little bit of a longer hunter ride, so that's good for him. He's got a pretty cute expression."

Holik will be at the Horse Park for all but one week of Summer in the Rockies, which runs for three weeks in June and three weeks in July, and she plans to keep competing Tache Rouge in the hunters and perhaps try some hunter derbies as well. She's already off to a good start in the jumpers - she won Thursday's $500 High Jr/AO Jumper - and with her success in the equitation as well, she looks to be tough to beat this summer.
Holik and Dahlila put in steady, even, rhythmical rounds to take home the blue ribbons in the ASPCA Maclay and Equitation 15-17 O/F classes. She used her long history with Dahlila, whom she's ridden for three years and had in her barn for 10 years, to plan a strategy that would suit the mare's style.
"I know that she gets a little worked up the more I show her, so I need just to keep calm, let her canter in her own way, and let the jumps come up," Holik said. "She favors her left lead. In one of the bending lines, she would land on her left lead, not her right, so I would leave a stride out in order not to get a lead change."

Holik said Dahlila is a versatile horse who can do any discipline but is particularly suited to equitation. "She's been a great equitation horse," Holik said. "And she can do hunters, jumpers, derbies, whatever. Her jumping style is amazing and it helps with the turns. She has a very big jump, but it helps me stay balanced and in the middle of her so I can make a tight turn."
The Equitation 15-17 classes, the first of the day, served as good preparation for the Maclay round. While competitors faced a new course for the Maclay, they encountered some familiar elements from earlier classes. Holik noted that Dahlila got comfortable in the ring and had a good sense of what to expect in the Maclay round.
"She knew which turns were coming up, and by the time we did the Maclay, she could anticipate what was going to happen, so we could have a smoother ride," Holik explained.
Along with the Maclay, a qualifier for the ASPCA Maclay Finals at the Alltech National Horse Show, junior riders had the opportunity to compete in a qualifier for the Washington International Horse Show Equitation Finals. Riders began with the Washington Jumper Phase and then moved on to the Washington Hunter Phase.
Kelli Cruciotti, riding Abigail Graham's French Kiss, got off to a strong start with a score of 86 in the Jumper Phase, putting her in the lead heading into the hunter round. She followed up with an 82 in the Hunter Phase to win that class and seal the overall victory.
Juniors return to action at the Colorado Horse Park on Saturday with the final classes in their division and the $1,000 Junior Hunter Classic. Amateur Owner Hunters will also step into the spotlight, with 3'3" and 3'6" divisions beginning on Saturday as well.
