Reports are now coming in that several horses in western states have been hospitalized or quarantined following the outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV). This disease is also known as Rhinopneumonitis, while the neurological strain is called Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM).
Current information is that one horse has been euthanized in Colorado, one has died in California and another has died in Idaho. A second horse is in quarantine in Colorado, and an additional horse in California was taken to UC Davis Veterinary Hospital.
Other cutting competitions have been cancelled or postponed.
One horse has been confirmed to be shedding the virus at Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The hospital is now closed to equine or camelid patients except for extreme emergencies.
Another horse in Washington state is currently hospitalized; however, tests have not confirmed when the horse is shedding the virus.
