EHV-1: As USDA Issues Final Report on Ogden Utah Cutting outbreak, Two Unrelated Fatal Cases Reported

Source:  Various/KatyM, Community News

Just as the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued it's final report on the 2011 EHV-1 Ogden, Utah cutting outbreak, reported on Barnmice News, two additional cases have been reported in the news.

While these new cases are generating interest, they do not appear to be related to the Utah outbreak.

One case is in Wyoming and involves a horse which was euthanized after showing severe symptoms.  Test results are pending.

A second horse has been isolated after testing positive.  The facility where the horse is stabled has been placed under quarantine.

According to the Billings Gazette/Casper Star-Tribune, these cases are not connected to the Ogden, Utah cutting.  They quote the Wyoming State Veterninarian, Dr. Jim Logan:

Logan said there is little reason to cancel horse events or restrict movement of horses other than those under quarantine since this appears to be an isolated incident.

The Johnson County incident, he said, is not related to the Ogden, Utah, cutting horses event, which led to a multistate outbreak in May.

The disease is not uncommon or new and has been reported in Wyoming in the past, he said.

In addition, a horse was recently euthanized at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Tests are also pending in this case, but neurologic symptoms were severe leading to the diagnosis.

According to the announcement from WCVM, again, this horse was not at the Utah Cutting, nor was it exposed to any animals which had attended the show.

In May, a horse in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, developed EHV-1 and was euthanized.  The Moosomin horse had been in contact with a horse that participated in the Ogden, Utah cutting, but   had no connection with the recent Saskatoon case.

The equine section of the Large Animal Clinic at the WCVM Teaching Hospital has imposed a voluntary quarantine until they can confirm that the virus is under control.  In addition, the owners of the horse that was euthanized have quarantined their farm.  No other animals there have shown symptoms.

In both the Wyoming and Saskatchewan cases, authorities have emphasized that the virus is widespread in the equine population and that these cases are isolated incidents rather than multi-case outbreaks.
