California EHV-1 Causing EHM Disease Update as of 1 pm 5/28/2011

A suspect horse with a low grade fever and moderate compatible neurologic signs has been reported. The horse resides in Glenn County at a facility with one of the California confirmed EHM positive horses. The suspect horse did not compete at the Ogden, UT or Bakersfield, CA event. Samples have been collected from the suspect horse and we are awaiting test results. Due to the holiday weekend, test results may not be available until Tuesday, however, updates will be posted as additional information becomes available.

CDFA advises owners of horses returning from the Ogden, Utah and Bakersfield, CA events and owners of horses that have subsequently come into contact with these returning horses to continue to isolate and monitor these horses for clinical signs. A temperature of 102F or greater should be reported immediately to a private practitioner.
