New Cases of Equine Herpes Virus Reported in New Mexico, Including One Death Horse Owners Urged to Limit Travel
The New Mexico Livestock Board says cases of equine herpes virus (EHV) continue to be reported throughout the western United States, including in New Mexico. Dr. Dave Fly, state veterinarian, confirmed the death of a horse in Bernalillo County Thursday, May 26, 2011 from the viral disease and a new case in Torrance County where another horse is showing signs of EHV.
"A total of two horses in central New Mexico have died from the virus. One horse in Lea County has recovered and two in the state are still ill,” said Dr. Fly. “All cases being reported involve horses already placed in one of the three quarantined facilities we have in the state.”
The outbreak is believed to have started with horses that attended the National Cutting Horse Association Championships in Ogden, Utah, earlier this month. A total of 75 confirmed EHV-1 or EHM cases have been reported in nine states including New Mexico. (AZ, CA, CO, ID, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA). Fifteen horses from New Mexico attended the show.
“Although the horses that attended the show have been quarantined for several days, there is still a threat of secondary exposures that may have occurred at other events or by horses that have not yet been identified,” said Dr. Fly. “We believe that an additional seven to ten days is needed before normal equine movement is recommended.”
Horse owners in New Mexico are urged to limit travel to help limit exposure. The New Mexico Livestock Board also recommends that major or large equine events be canceled for the next ten days. Anyone with questions is urged to contact the state veterinarian or visit the provided links.

As of 12:00 PM on May 26, Oregon has four horses that have tested positive but are not showing clinical signs of the neurological herpes virus (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy) or EHM. A fifth horse developed neurological signs and was euthanized. It tested positive for EHM. All test positive horses are in Clackamas, Deschutes and Umatilla counties. All new cases have occurred in horse facilities that already held test positive horses. All test positive horses are directly linked to the cutting horse event held in Utah from April 30 through May 8, 2011. The 19 Oregon horses that attended the Ogden cutting horse show all remain under quarantine with their stable mates at this time.
Texas

Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) Update May 27, 2011: The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has one confirmed case of the neurologic form of EHV-1 to report today. Preliminary investigation indicates no connection to the Ogden, Utah NCHA event. A Quarter Horse racehorse stabled in Ector County, TX displayed neurologic symptoms consistent with the disease, and ultimately tested positive for EHV-1. All horses on the premises are under quarantine and will be managed according to USDA recommendations for confirmed cases. Additional information is being gathered to determine if any other horses were exposed.
Regarding the Ogden, UT event, there are currently 12 known horses in Texas that attended the event and 174 cohorts (stablemates) remaining under movement restrictions. There are now a total of 8 premises that have been exposed and those premises are in the following counties: Randall, Parker, Jack, Kerr and Mills counties.
Horse owners should contact event organizers in advance to ensure that scheduled events have not been cancelled. Some other states have established emergency rules for entry as a result of this situation. A list of contact information for all 50 state animal health agencies can be found on the U.S. Animal Association website or on the USDA website.
*Note* To be consistent with reports from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other states, the TAHC is following USDA guidelines for clinical and suspect cases which have very specific criteria to meet the case definition. Currently “suspect” and “confirmed” cases will be the two types of cases that the TAHC reports. The USDA website outlines the specific definition for what is classified as a “suspect” and/or “confirmed” case.
