Numbers of confirmed cases of EHV-1 related to the Utah Cutting outbreak have increased by Friday afternoon.

Washington state is now reporting 5 confirmed cases.  There have been no fatalities.  The Horse.com reports that two of the new positive cases are at the Washington State University (WSU) Veterinary Teaching Hospital which has been under voluntary quarantine since the first case there was confirmed. Debra C. Sellon, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, a professor of equine medicine at WSU is quoted as saying:

"We now have two confirmed positives that are presumed to be secondary infections," Sellon said, adding that these infections were likely transmitted from a horse that competed at the NCHA show and was treated at WSU for unrelated reasons. After confirming that the index horse was EHV-1 positive, the VTH quarantined its facility and staff members have been monitoring the patients' temperatures twice daily.

"We had two this morning with fevers that are positive, but there are no neurologic signs in any of the horses at WSU," she added.

California is reporting, as of 3pm Friday, that there are two more confirmed cases which brings the number of cases in that state up to 15.  The positive cases are spread over 10 counties including:  Amador (1), Glenn (2), Kern (2), Los Angeles (1), Marin (1), Napa (1), Placer (2), Plumas (1), Shasta (1), and Stanislaus (3).

All of the stricken horses within California were at the Utah Cutting.  There have been no instances of secondary infections in horses that were in contact with the Utah Cutting participants.  However, one mare is exhibiting neurological symptoms that could be indicative of several different diseases. This mare did not attend the Utah Cutting and so far has not tested positive for EHV-1/EHM, or any other disease.  She is in quarantine and is being treated for her symptoms.

So far in California, only one horse has been euthanized which happened at the Kern County Cutting event on May 13.  Two cases are currently at UC Davis; all animals that have tested positive are under State Quarantine.  Out of all positive cases, six show neurological symptoms, while the rest have only had temperatures.

In Colorado, nine horses have tested positive for EHV-1, of which two have been euthanized.  There are an additional 22 suspected cases.

In Idaho, two horses have been euthanized following severe neurologic symptoms, but only one had tested positive.  Out of the 36 horses from Idaho which had participated in the Utah Cutting, there are 13 with symptoms and are under quarantine.

Utah has five confirmed cases.

Arizona is reporting one severe neurologic case, while other exposed horses are under quarantine.

One horse in New Mexico was euthanized after showing extreme neurologic symptoms and confirmation of the EHV-1 virus.

A second horse in Oregon has tested positive for nEHV-1.  The second horse, in Umatilla County, had been in close contact with horses that had attended the Utah Cutting.

Texas has one confirmed neurologic case.

Nebraska, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota and Wyoming still have no reported cases.  Nebraska state officials have placed quarantines on five farms where horses which attended the Utah Cutting are housed.

In Alberta, there are three positive cases, and two have shown neurologic symptoms.  British Columbia has no new case reports, but it is not mandatory to report EHV-1 in the province at this time.
