Since response to the current outbreak of EHV-1 is directed by individual states and provincial veterinarians, accurate numbers of current cases are not located in a central source. The Veterinary Infection Control Society (VICS) has been collecting information to help clarify the situation.
As of May 18, these are the numbers:
Location | Confirmed | Comment | Suspected | Comment |
Washington | 3 | 3 | Fever | |
Colorado | 6 | 1 death | 14 | 1 death |
California | 10 | At least 1 death
British Columbia | 3 | Independent confirmation lacking |
||
Alberta | 1 | Mild neurological disease | 2
Idaho | 1 | 1 death | 2 | 1 death, 1 fever |
Utah | 5 | |||
Arizona | 2 | 2 deaths | ||
New Mexico | 2 |
Oregon | 1 | Healthy but infected |
||
|
Concerningly, these reports include infections both in horses that were at the Utah event as well as horses that had subsequent contact with those that were at the event. This secondary transmission means that at this point not all infected horses will have a direct link to the event (i.e. just because a particular horse didn't go to that show doesn't mean it can't be affected).
