Mother-Daughter Team Dominate at CDI-W Fall Festival of Dressage
Ottawa, ON – The mother-daughter team of Diane Creech and Vanessa Creech-Terauds of Caistor Centre, ON swept the CDI-W New England Dressage Association (NEDA) Fall Festival of Dressage, held Sept. 22-25, 2016 in Saugerties, NY.
Diane Creech put in impressive performances riding Chrevi’s Christo (Chrevi’s Cavallo x Matador), a 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding she co-owns with Louise Leatherdale. The duo earned a final score of 69.920% for top honours in the Grand Prix, before moving on to win the Grand Prix Special with 68.157%.
Taking after her mother and coach, Vanessa Creech-Terauds swept the FEI Young Rider division. Her steady mount for the weekend was Rob Roy (Rubin Royal x Glorieux), a 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding co-owned by her mother and Louise Leatherdale. In the Team Championship Test, Creech-Terauds earned 70.263% from the judges for her first win. She continued her winning streak, topping the Individual Test with 69.342%, and wrapping up with 72.200% in the Freestyle.
“Vanessa and I were so thrilled about the success at NEDA,” Creech said. “Vanessa and I make great teammates. We support each other and make sure, despite taking our sport seriously, to also have fun. Vanessa is just as competitive as myself, but also has a great calmness in the show ring that gives her a special edge to compete under pressure.”
Not many riders can say they share such close, personal ties to their coach as Creech-Terauds. And it seems to work in her favour.
“I am lucky to have great emotional support from my mother and be able to draw from the experiences of my trainer. In my case, they happen to be the same person,” she said. “I don’t feel that my mother being a successful rider is a reason to feel pressure, but instead something to look up to.”
Living the dressage dream, this mother-daughter team attribute much of their success to their fortunate ties to Louise Leatherdale, the co-owner of both mounts.
“We are so extremely lucky to have Mrs. Leatherdale not only to support me but also Vanessa, giving her the opportunity to work and feel such great horses,” said Creech.
Additional Canadians earning top results at the CDI-W NEDA Fall Festival of Dressage included Canadian Olympian, Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, ON and her London 2012 Olympic mount, D Niro (D-Day x Napoleon 625), a 17-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Mary Brooks and Brookhaven Dressage Inc. With a score of 69.060%, they finished just behind Creech in the Grand Prix, earning second place. Together, they also danced their way to second place in the Grand Prix Freestyle, scoring 69.825%.
The winner of the Grand Prix Freestyle was Jill Irving of Moncton, NB, who rode her 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding Degas 12 (De Niro x Regazzoni) to a score of 73.050%. Together they also took third place in the Grand Prix (67.540%).
Inga Hamilton of Fergus, ON earned a hat trick in the small tour, winning all three classes aboard Fabregas (Florencio I x De Niro), a 10-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Elaine Parkinson. They started out with a score of 72.149% in the Prix St. Georges, then moved on to achieve 67.912% in the Intermediate I and 73.100% in the Intermediate I Freestyle.
Also successful in the small tour were Lindsay Kellock of Toronto, ON and Lori Bell of Beaverton, ON. Kellock’s highlight came in the Intermediate I Freestyle, where she earned second place with 70.325% aboard Royal Prinz (Royal Diamond x Dream of Glory), a 15-year-old Oldenburg stallion owned by Teresa Simmons. The duo also took fourth place in the Prix St. Georges (67.719%) and the Intermediate I (67.018%).
Riding Flirt (Florencio x Donnerhall), her eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Bell started off with a second place finish in the Prix St. Georges, scoring 70.088%. She followed up by earning third place in both the Intermediate I (67.719%) and Intermediate I Freestyle (69.475%).
