Equine Canada Extends Thanks to Own the Podium’s Alex Baumann
Ottawa, ON — On behalf of Canada's equestrian athletes, Equine Canada and the Canadian Equestrian Team would like to express our sincerest thanks to Alex Baumann for his years of service to Canadian sport and Canadian society.
Mr. Baumann has announced that, following treatment for his second bout with cancer, he has made the difficult decision to stand down as CEO of Own the Podium to enable him to relocate his family to New Zealand to be closer to their relations. He will take up the role of CEO of High-Performance Sport New Zealand in January.
"Alex is one of our country's true champions, in every meaning of the word," said Akaash Maharaj, CEO of Equine Canada and the Canadian Equestrian Team. "As a world record setting, double Olympic gold medallist, he is one of the finest athletes Canada has ever produced. As head of Own the Podium, he has helped to transform the culture of the national sport system and massively increase support for Canadian athletes. We will miss his leadership, and we will do our best to honour his contributions to our country by giving New Zealand a drubbing at the 2012 Olympic Games!"
