Multi-Discipline
CHIO AACHEN WORLD EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL
The renowned CHIO Aachen World Equestrian Festival took place from June 21 to 30. As one of the most prestigious equestrian competitions in Europe, the CHIO Aachen brings together top competitors from around the world, and is one of few FEI-level non-championship competitions to feature multiple disciplines.
Canada was represented in both dressage and vaulting.
Jeanine van der Sluijs of Olds, AB took part in the vaulting portion of the competition, going up against a large field of top female vaulters. Her experience kicked off with two classes on June 21. In her opening class, the Individual Female Compulsory Test, she came in 20th on a score of 6.607. She followed up with 15th place for a score of 6.168 in the Individual Female Technical Test. On June 22 she capped off the competition with a 16th place finish (6.724) in the Individual Female Freestyle Test to Music.
"CHIO Aachen was a very positive competition for me. I felt that I was able to bring together a lot of the smaller pieces that I have put a lot of work into over the past couple months," commented van der Sluijs. "Every year that I have competed in Aachen, I have kept improving my results and feel that I am definitely on the right track with where I want to go."
Her borrowed mount for the weekend was Tylers Kernel, a 16-year-old gelding owned by John and Jane Eccles of Great Britain. John also stepped in as van der Sluijs' lunger.
Pia Fortmuller of Priddis, AB (but currently residing in Germany to train with Olympian Heiki Kemmer) represented Canada in dressage. Partnered with her 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Orion, Fortmuller took on a large field of top-caliber competitors in the CDI 4* Grand Prix test on June 26, earning 14th place on a score of 67.340%. The duo were also awarded ninth place (69.350%) for their performance in the exciting CDI 4* Grand Prix Freestyle before a packed crowd on June 29.
"It was an honour to be able to dance down the centerline with Orion in Aachen. It is such a magical competition because you really have to earn your invitation to be able to ride there," explained Fortmuller. "(Overall) I could not be happier with how the competition went. Being able to compete successfully in Aachen is a dream come true."
