Wellington, FL - "Equine Law 101" will have its first of ten class meetings this coming Monday, January 23, 2012. Renowned equine attorney, Krysia Carmel Nelson, will teach the course in the Special Events Pavillion on the WEF showgrounds from 3:30-5:30 pm.

"Equine Law 101: Business Essentials for Horsemen" is an introductory business law course focusing on essential horse industry topics. By focusing on case studies, as well as recent cases, the class will prepare its members to respond competently and effectively in a variety of the most commonly encountered business situations.  

"I will cover a different topic every Monday," Nelson explained. "The first class will include a general introduction to legal concepts and terminology, but we will move quickly into specific horse-related topics, like how the law calculates damages when a horse is injured. The second class will cover livery liens, horses as 'gifts', and what the law requires of someone who is caring for another person's horse. The third class will be devoted to liability issues. This is just useful stuff that you need to know if you have anything to do with horses."

Subsequent classes will cover industry regulation (focusing on USEF and FEI cases), horse sales and leases, insurance, business formation, employment law, immigration law, taxation, criminal law, and wills and trusts.

"I am so excited that we will be able to have the class on grounds, in the Special Events Pavilion," says Nelson. "It will be very accessible for everyone, and we will certainly have enough room to accommodate "walk-in" auditors who decide to show up at the last minute." Auditors may choose to attend all ten classes, or pick and choose individual classes based on particular interests.

"It looks like we will have a really diverse group - professionals, amateurs, college students. The class is open to anyone who is interested in the material." Nelson also noted that the two hour format is ideal for this kind of class. "For the first hour or so, I lecture on the basic principles relevant to the topic of the day. But then I open up the discussion to talk about recent cases and case studies. My students' favorite game is something I made up called 'You Be The Judge,' where I present a case and the students get to decide how it turns out," explains Nelson.

Nelson is a nationally recognized expert in equine law and a frequent speaker at industry and legal conferences, including the National Equine Law Conference, and has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Washington & Lee University School of Law in Lexington, VA. In addition to her equine law practice, Ms. Nelson serves as an administrative law judge for the Virginia Supreme Court. She is competing at WEF on her horse Affirmed on Appeal, on whom she was the 2011 USHJA/WCHR Amateur Owner 3'3" Mid-Atlantic Regional Champion.
