The Equine Herpes Virus-1 outbreak, which started at NCHA Western Championships in Ogden, Utah,  continues to grow.  Additional cases were reported over the weekend.

 

In the U.S.:

California:  one new case, with a total of 18 cases, and one fatality.  Seven cases show neurologic symptoms, 10 have a temperature, and one has shown no signs.

 

Utah:  Seven confirmed cases, two euthanized.  Four facilities are under quarantine.

 

Washington:  Six confirmed cases, two displaying fever.  At least one case has displayed neurologic symptoms.

 

Colorado:  Nine confirmed cases, with 22 additional suspected, two euthanized.  Twelve facilities under quarantine.

 

Oregon:  Three confirmed cases, with two pending confirmation.  None show neurologic symptoms.

Arizona:  One case which showed neurologic symptoms and was euthanized.

 

New Mexico:  One case which showed neurologic symptoms and was euthanized.

 

Texas:  One case.

 

Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming have no confirmed cases.

 

In Canada:

 

Alberta:  Three confirmed cases, one with neurologic symptoms.  

 

British Columbia:  EHV-1 is not on the list of reportable diseases.  Equine Canada reported on May 20, that there were three suspected cases in B.C.

Florida:  One horse positive, one horse not confirmed.  Both horses were euthanized.  These cases are not considered by Florida authorities to be related to the Utah Cutting outbreak.
