First Olympic Equestrian Medals: Germany Grabs the Gold

The first London 2012 Olympic medals in Equestrian sports were decided during the first show jumping round for the Three-Day Eventing competition. Germany successfully defended its title from 2008 with a strong performance as four of their five riders finished in the top ten.

Michael Jung and Sam finished in the second slot, Sandra Auffarth in 5th, Ingrid Klimke had two rails to drop to 8th, while Dirk Schrade finished in 10th.

Great Britain earned silver with Mary King going clear in third, Kristina Cook with one time penalty in fourth, then Zara Phillips in 14th, William Fox-Pitt in 15th, and Nicola Wilson in 19th. All will move forward to the individual final.

New Zealand battled it out with Sweden and hung on to the Bronze medal. However, the overall leader going into the individual jumping round is Sweden's Sara Algotsson Ostholt.

Ireland moved up several places to finish in fifth while the USA finished in seventh behind Australia.

Canada had a tough outing , finishing in 13th.
