2011 $25,000 Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby Judge Julie Winkel Hosts Super Clinic Series

Carson City, NV - August 24, 2011 - The 2011 $25,000 Franktown Meadows USHJA International Hunter Derby will take place at the Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility in Carson City, Nevada on September 5, 2011. The venue is nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and offers outstanding views and immaculate grounds, serving as the perfect backdrop for the derby as spectators admire the beautiful hunter derby course. This year, the event is proud to feature a weeklong series of USEF Super Clinics hosted by judge Julie Winkel, at her nearby Maplewood Stables, Inc.

The Super Clinic Series hosted by Julie Winkel is five days of education for five different licenses. Participants will have the opportunity to fulfill all of their clinic requirements at one location. The clinics will include: Jumper Judge September 5, Hunter Breeding September 7, Jumper Course Design September 8, and Hunter Course Design September 9. There will be also be a symposium on the Training and Development of Young Horses on September 9, 10, and 11, presented by Julie Winkel, Geoff Teal, and Linda Allen. This will be a long weekend packed with information and opportunity for all those interested in the horse sport from the Young Horse perspective: from bringing on young horses from early work up to the competitive level. The clinics will offer opportunities for all participants and feature classroom sessions, practice judging, professional instruction, round table discussions, cocktail parties, and much more.

"I want to give other people the opportunity to learn what I learned through trial and error without going through all of that pain and suffering," laughed Winkel. "There is so much opportunity for learning and continuing education, which is a big thing for me since I am a student of the horse and I want to learn all aspects of it. I also have an internship program and have 12 interns that are here because they want to be professionals. This weekend will be an opportunity for them to listen in on these classes as well. I grew up without the ability of professional instruction or any guidelines for how to become a professional and make it in this business. I did it by the seat of the pants and worked my way up."

Winkel's Maplewood Stables, Inc. is located on 150 acres with 100 horses on the property where the clinics will be held, just ten minutes from the Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby. The cocktail parties will also be held at Winkel's farm. "I'm all about parties, it makes it fun for everybody and part of going to these clinics is networking and making contacts and doing business with each other," said Winkel.

The renowned professional, will also be returning as a judge at the 2011 $25,000 Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby. Winkel has judged numerous hunter derbies since their inception and most recently judged the $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, in Lexington, KY. Winkel brings a multitude of experience to the judge's stand from her vast career as a professional in the business and years of judging experience.

"The Franktown Meadows Derby features a beautiful field and it really brings back what the hunters are all about: being in the field, fox hunting, galloping. I judged last year with George [Morris] and I was thrilled to be part of the first one," commented Winkel. "I know what to expect in the way of top-notch footing, the course, jumps and the highest level of competition. I am excited to be part of all of it again. I will be looking for horses that are brilliant in their style and their way of moving and that I would like to show. That is what gets me excited with judging, the beautiful horses."
