Samantha Schaefer Receives the SHALANNO Style of Riding Award at the 36th Annual Hampton Classic Horse Show

Bridgehampton, NY— Samantha Schaefer, of Westminster, MD, was the recipient of the 2011 SHALANNO Style of Riding Trophy at the 36th Annual Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY.

The SHALANNO Style of Riding Trophy is awarded to the Junior Jumper Rider who best exemplifies the American style of equitation as modeled by Olympic medalists Joe Fargis, Conrad Homfeld, and George Morris. The award recipient must have the respectful, dignified, courteous and workmanlike manner of a true sportsman.

The process for selection of the award is unique in that it includes the jumper judges and horse show personnel such as the person at the jumper ring in-gate, the jumper stewards, and the announcers. These members of the staff are in position to observe the necessary sportsmanship qualities of all of the junior jumper riders competing at the Classic. They also have the knowledge of equitation riding that is necessary to select the rider that best represents the SHALANNO Style of Riding Trophy.

Schaefer has been riding since she was 18-months old and years ago she practiced Team Penning with her father. She has excelled in the hunter ring as well as the jumper ring in addition to her skills as an equitation rider.

Schaefer’s impressive results included wins in the hunter, jumper, and equitation divisions at the 2011 Hampton Classic. She was a repeat victor in the Sam Edelman Equitation Championship riding Pioneer, owned by Heritage Farm; she won the $2,500 Junior Jumper 1.30m class on Sugar Ray; and she was Champion of the Small Junior Hunter Division 16-17 on Hero, owned by Sophie Cohen.

The SHALANNO award was introduced at the Classic in 2004. Past recipients include: Karen Polle, Michael Hughes, Victoria Birdsall, Maria Schaub, Julie Welles and Aimee Aron.

Other rider awards presented at this year’s Hampton Classic include the Charlie Weaver Leading Hunter Rider Award that was won by Scott Stewart of Wellington, FL; and the Horse Haven Trophy for the best junior rider on a pony that was awarded to Katherine Strauss of Southampton, NY.
