Desert Circuit II comes to a close as qualifying heats up and
competition peaks at HITS Thermal

THERMAL, CA – Josephina Nor Lantzman put an exclamation point on Desert Circuit II when she rode her own Chello Z to the blue ribbon in Sunday's $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California.

In Sunday's $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, Nor Lantzman and Chello Z were the top horse-and-rider team out of a group of 34 starters that challenged the first-round track set by International Course Designer Bernard Cabral of Lisbon, Portugal.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way I finished my two weeks at HITS Thermal,” said Nor Lantzman. “I will be back for the second half of the circuit where I look forward to competing against some of the top riders in the world. I am riding for Brazil and my ultimate goal is to make the 2016 Olympics.”

Cabral's first-round track featured 13 fences with a time allowed of 84 seconds and appeared to have an assortment of challenges as the course produced downed rails at 12 of the 13 obstacles along the way. Five riders escaped faults to advance to Cabral’s jump-off course. Nor Lantzman and Cello Z posted a second round time of 47.80 seconds to eventually win the class.

Michelle Spadone and Redfield Farm’s Coco came home in 49.76 seconds to finish in second place and Jill Humphrey aboard Leone Equestrians Inc.’s Kaskaya set the Great American Time to Beat in the jump-off with a round in 51.77 seconds to place third.

The final ride of Sunday’s featured class belonged to Harley Brown and Paige Harriman’s Angelli. They were careful and clean crossing the timers in 51.92 seconds to grab fourth place. Olympic Gold Medal winner Will Simpson rounded out the top five in the iron’s of Monarch International’s Acorina with a four-fault jump-off round.
