Allen's Team Retains Top Spot In Global Champions League
BERTRAM Allen's Valkenswaard United have held onto their overall lead despite a nine-fault score in today's (Sunday) sixth round of the Global Champions League which took place at the five-star meeting in Madrid, Spain.
The Irish rider and his Valkenswaard team-mate John Whitaker of Great Britain, who have given their team two victories in the series to date, could only manage a 10th place today.
Allen, who was riding Quiet Easy, incurred four faults in the first round, while Whitaker and Lord of Arabia had five faults, a result that prevented them making the cut for the second round.
"We had a blip in Mexico and again today, so we'll have to get it back together," said Allen afterwards. "I think we're a great team and a great combination, and it's a long season ahead."
Today's round was won by the Rome Gladiators team of Laura Renwick (GBR) with Bintang II and the USA's Laura Kraut, riding Confu, who finished on a two-round team penalty score of just four faults.
Valkenswaard United's lead at the top of the league table is now under threat by the Monaco Aces team of the USA's Schuyler Riley and Colombia's Daniel Bluman, who are now just three points behind the leaders.
The next round of the league takes place next weekend at Chantilly, France.
