BRODERICK TAKES FIRST PLACE AT BARNADOWN

THE SECOND leg of Horse Sport Ireland’s Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2012 took place last weekend at Barnadown. Entries were strong in all three age categories and with prize money totalling €9,500 on offer for these classes resulted in very competitive classes on both the qualifier and the final days.

Fifty eight combinations were entered for Saturday’s 5 year old qualifier, with 42 horses starting the 6 year old qualifier. The 7 year old class had 31 entries. The top 25 horses in each of Saturday’s qualifiers went through to Sunday’s finals. The 5 year old final saw 12 combinations producing clear rounds to make it through to the jump-off, which is not run against the clock. Ten combinations went on to share the €3,150 prize fund, when they produced double clear rounds. 33 starters in the 6 year old final, resulted in 10 combinations jumping clear and through to the second round. All but one of these 10 jumped a second clear to take home a share of the €2,700 prize fund.

In the 7 year old final, 13 horse and rider combinations jumped clear to go through to the second round from a starting field of 24. Fifth into the ring, Catherine Thornton, riding her own Lux Z (HANN) gelding Milano (ISH) set the clear round time to beat at 39.41. Second last into the ring, Greg Broderick aboard the Caledonia Stables stallion BP Blondey (ISH), shaved almost 4 seconds off the time to take eventual first place. Broderick was also placed 5th on Lisa Cawleys’ Golden Exchange (ISH).
