EQUESTRIAN - ONE MILLION EURO GRAND PRIX TOPS THE BILL IN BRAZIL
A STAGGERING one million euro in prize money will be on offer in Rio de Janeiro's Grand Prix at the Athina Onassis Horse Show this weekend.
The rich reward comes on Saturday, after three days of competition in Brazil, and the Irish riders bidding for a share of the pot are Jessica Kurten, who competes with Vincente, and Denis Lynch, who is taking three horses to the show - Lantinus, All Star 5 and Night Train.
Meanwhile, nearly 6,000 miles away, Britain's Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham will attract its traditional huge audience, and Ireland is represented by Shane Breen, Dermott Lennon and Billy Twomey, with the Grand Prix taking place at the city's National Exhibition Centre on Sunday night.
Joanne Sloan Allen and Conor Swail fly the Irish flag in the sunnier surroundings of Tetouan in Morocco, while a total of 12 Irish riders take part in the three divisions of the French show jumping event at Barbizon in France, which includes classes for both horses and ponies.
At Weston Park in Britain, Irish Eventers Sam Watson and Ellen Fitzsimons compete in the one and two-star categories, while Lucy Latta, Shannon Nelson and Ciara Murphy take part in the pony event.
