EVENTING - ARMY RIDER CURRAN MOVES UP TO THIRD AT WAREGEM

ARMY rider Capt. Geoff Curran moved up to third place after the show jumping phase in the three-star event at Waregem in Belgium Saturday after a classy performance that left all the poles standing.

With the MInister for Defence's Irish Sport Horse gelding Bolabaun, the 32 year-old Waterford native was seventh after the dressage phase, but his zero jumping score left him just over five points adrift of today's new leader, New Zealand's Mark Todd, riding another Irish Sport Horse, the grey gelding Quantum Leap.

Curran had also held fourth place after dressage with Dublin-bred The Jump Jet, but four fences down in show jumping this afternoon dropped the combination to 15th overall.

Waregem concludes on Sunday with the cross-country phase, Curran's favourite element of a three-day event, where he stands a good chance of improving his position on both horses.

Netherlands rider Raf Kooremans holds overnight second place on the Belgian-bred Cavalor Telstar, 3.8 points ahead of the Irish rider.
