IRISH RIDERS TO THE FORE IN THIS WEEKEND'S WORLD CLASS SHOWS

IRISH riders made an impact in the opening days of this weekend's show jumping action, with two wins and several top five places in Toronto, a third place for Jessica Kurten in Verona, and a fifth for Shane Breen at Vienna.

Ulster-born Dermott Lennon made his mark on Thursday night at the four-star Canadian show, riding the Irish Sport Horse Loughview Lou Lou to victory in the Top Score competition, a class which also saw Cork's Shane Sweetnam and Cyklon take second place and Kilkenny-born Richie Moloney slot Let's Go into tenth. An in-form Lennon also recorded a win in the speed class with Hallmark Elite.

Moloney distinguished himself in Toronto's World Cup Grand Prix on Wednesday, taking third place with the Irish Sport Horse Slieveanorra, while Co. Down's Conor Swail finished in sixth with Lansdowne, and Lennon, again riding Loughview Lou Lou, placing ninth. Sweetnam was also in the prize money, with an 11th place on Amaretto Darco.

At the five-star Italian show in Verona, Antrim-born Kurten produced a third place in today's (Friday) big speed class aboard API Largo, losing out to Italian winner Juan Carlos Garcia and Paulin by just over one-and-a-half seconds.

In Austria's five-star show at Vienna, Tipperary's Shane Breen placed equal fifth on Balloon in today's opening speed class, sharing the spot on an identical time with the Ukraine's Cassio Rivetti, riding Billy Birr. The competition was won by Brazil's Carlos Eduardo Motta Ribas and Ronaldo.

Verona's World Cup competition takes place on Sunday, while Vienna's Grand Prix runs on Monday.
