KELLY WINS FIRST LEG OF 2012 STUDBOOK SERIES AT LOUTH

THE FIRST leg of Horse Sport Ireland’s Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2012 took place this weekend at the Horseware Louth County Show, with Capt. Michael Kelly taking the 7 Year-Old Trophy.

This is the first year that the 6 year old and 7 year old classes ran independently and the 6 year olds will not run against the clock for the first half of the series. Entries were strong in all three age categories and with prize money totalling €9,500 on offer for these classes; competition was fierce at the Dromiskin venue.

Fifty-seven combinations were entered for Saturday’s 5 year old qualifier, with 33 horses starting in both the 6 year old and the 7 year old classes. The top 25 horses in each of Saturday’s qualifiers went through to Sunday’s finals. The 5 year old final saw 12 combinations producing clear rounds to make it through to the jump-off, which is not run against the clock. Six combinations went on to share the €3,150 prize fund, when they produced double clear rounds. 28 starters in the 6 year old class produced 15 combinations clear and through to the second round with 11 double clears to share the €2,700 prize fund.

In the 7 year old final, 8 horse and rider combinations jumped clear to go through to the second round from a starting field of 25. Second into the ring, Capt. Michael Kelly aboard the Tlaloc M (SF) gelding, Mullentine Loughgall (ISH) set the time to beat 42.57 leaving all the fences standing. Third last to go, Harry Marshall and Derryinver Luxury Cruise (ISH) challenged, but narrowly missed out, securing second place.
