O’CONNOR MAKES SHOW JUMPING FINAL AFTER SWEDISH WITHDRAWAL

MEATH'S Cian O'Connor and the gelding Blue Loyd will now compete for Ireland in today's (Wednesday) Olympic show jumping final at Greenwich Park.

Because the duo failed to qualify for the final by the narrowest of margins on Monday, they were placed top of the reserve list alongside two riders from other nations.

This morning, it was announced that Swedish rider Rolf-Goran Bengtsson's horse Casall had been withdrawn from the final, so 32 year-old O'Connor automatically moved onto today's startlist along with the two other riders.

The Olympic final begins at noon, with all riders starting on zero penalty points, but only the top 20 will go through from the first round to the final and medal-winning round in the evening.

As first reserve O'Connor tied on points with Argentina's Jose Maria Larocca and Belgium's Dirk Demeersman, and under Olympic rules all three will now go through to the final following the withdrawal of Bengtsson's horse.
