O'DONNELL VICTORY AT MAUBEUGE RAISES IRISH WEEKEND TALLY TO FIVE WINS

PADDY O'Donnell from Fenor in Co. Waterford took Ireland's weekend tally of wins to a total of five last night (Saturday) at the three star show in Maubeuge, France.

The 25 year-old, riding Thomas Power's Clover Flush mare Harristown Princess, beat Britain's Laura Renwick and Oz de Breve by just under a third of a second in the Grand Prix Qualifier, and also saw off challenges from other top British riders like Ellen Whitaker, Tim Stockdale and Guy Williams to take the 6,000 euro prize.

O'Donnell's win came after fellow Irish rider Shane Breen took first in Friday's jump-off class with another Irish-bred, his own Olympic Lux gelding Cos I Can. Tipperary's Breen was the victor in an epic 16 horse jump-off at the French venue, and like O'Donnell claimed the trophy with a third of a second in hand, seeing off British runner-up Tim Stockdale and the Irish-bred Kalico Bay Fresh Direct.

At the four-star show in Hagen, Germany, Tipperary's Denis Lynch scored back-to-back victories on Thursday night and Friday with Flaminia Straumann's chestnut gelding Night Train, while former pony gold medallist Bertram Allen continued his rise in the ranks with a two-star win at Antwerp aboard Billy Twomey's mare Wild Thing.
