IRELAND'S JUNIORS TAKE GOLD IN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

ADDING to their country's recent international tally of successes, Ireland's Junior Show Jumpers Bertram Allen, Shannon McKenzie, Max O'Reilly Hyland and Sven Hadley this evening (Thursday) took the Gold Medal in the European Championships in Austria after a mammoth competition that involved 21 nations.

Double clear rounds from Allen and Wild Thing and Hadley riding Adelgonde Z set the Irish quartet up for a commanding lead, and coupled with a clear and a four fault round from Max O'Reilly Hyland and Da Vinci's Pride, the Irish finished on four faults, well clear of 12 fault challenges from Belgium and Great Britain.

Belgium finally took the Silver Medal after a jump-off with Britain.

Ireland's discard score in the competition was Shannon McKenzie and Peyroux.

In July, Ireland's Under-16 pony eventing team swept to victory at the European Championships in Fontainebleau, France, with Galway's Cathal Daniels added to the triumph by winning the Individual Gold, and Tipperary's Ana O'Brien - daughter of racing's Aidan O'Brien - claiming Bronze.

Last week, the Irish Young Rider team took the silver medal at the European Eventing Championships in Malmo, Sweden.

Horse Sport Ireland Chairman Joe Walsh said today: "This gold medal today caps what has been a phenomenal month for Irish equestrian sport. An Olympic medal and five underage European medals. Hopefully we can continue the run in the Aga Khan tomorrow."
